The Functional Patterns Method

Functional Patterns corrects posture, gait and movement patterns to achieve pain-free movement — training the body according to its natural functions: standing, walking, running and throwing.

Where traditional fitness and rehab train muscles in isolation, we treat the body as one connected system and correct movement at the root.

Not Another Fitness Trend

A scientifically grounded, results-oriented method that addresses the root causes of pain and dysfunction.

A systems-based approach

The body is one interconnected system. Every muscle and joint has to work together for balanced movement.

Movement over aesthetics

We train for efficient, biomechanically sound movement that carries into daily life — not short-term cosmetic gains.

Biomechanics-driven

By understanding how forces act on the body, we move in ways that reduce wear and tear on joints and tissues.

Results-driven

Proven across professional athletes and people with long-standing chronic pain — succeeding where other methods stall.

What Your Assessment Looks Like

No two sessions are the same. Here's the foundation we work from.

Functional Patterns gait cycle analysis on a treadmill
1

Gait Cycle Analysis

We start with the gait cycle as our primary assessment tool. Whatever your fitness level, you'll step onto the treadmill. If you're in too much pain to run, walking still reveals valuable information about how your body moves.

Postural photos taken for assessment and progress tracking
2

Postural Photos

We take detailed postural photos to see how dysfunctional movement has affected your standing posture. They're also a visual benchmark — the "before" you'll compare your progress against.

Slow-Motion Gait Analysis

We analyse your gait footage in slow motion against high-performing movers to pinpoint dysfunction — a hip drop from a disengaged core, or rotating more on one side than the other. This shows us exactly where your body is compensating.

4

Customised Corrective Exercises

Based on your gait and posture, we design exercises that target your areas of dysfunction — building strength, improving symmetry and rehydrating the fascia throughout your body. We address root causes, not just symptoms.

Customised myofascial release protocol
5

Myofascial Release Protocol

A customised myofascial release protocol targets long-term adhesions that restrict tension distribution. Unlike stretching — which can destabilise joints — this improves tissue elasticity and relieves pain without adding instability.

Holistic lifestyle discussion at Functional Patterns Burleigh
6

Holistic Lifestyle Discussion

Lifestyle factors like diet and stress play a real role in healing. We discuss these to identify anything else contributing to your pain or dysfunction — building a clear roadmap to better movement.

Learning the movements

For your first 10 sessions or so, new movements will feel foreign. We heavily cue every movement — tilting, shifting and rotating to switch on the right muscles, moving slowly for symmetry and safety.

Momentum takes hold

After around 10 sessions you'll have a firm grasp of the concepts and a stronger mind-body connection — feeling more connected, coordinated and confident in your workouts and daily movement.

Lasting change

Meaningful results take time — usually between 3 months and 3 years depending on severity. Expect changes in posture, pain, muscle tone, mental clarity and how you move through everyday life.

Method & Sessions

How many sessions will I need?+
It depends on your goals and condition. For chronic pain or postural correction, most clients notice improvements after a few weeks (usually 6–8 sessions). Long-term results may take several months of consistent work, and athletes often continue sessions to keep refining performance.
How many times per week should I attend?+
Most clients train 1–2 sessions a week — enough for consistent, lasting progress. We give you homework exercises and posture work between sessions. It's worth doing 1–2 a week for as long as you can before potentially reducing frequency.
How long is the initial appointment, and what does it include?+
The initial appointment is typically 90 minutes and includes a comprehensive assessment of posture, gait, movement mechanics and lifestyle factors. This helps identify the imbalances or dysfunctions contributing to your pain, so we can tailor the program to you.
How long are follow-up sessions?+
Follow-up sessions are usually 60 minutes, focused on corrective exercises, movement retraining and reassessing progress. Each session builds on the last to gradually restore proper movement patterns and relieve pain.
What results can I expect, and how quickly?+
Results vary with your condition and commitment. Most clients start to feel improvements in posture, chronic pain and movement efficiency after 4–10 sessions. Structural/scoliosis change, injury rehab and strength gains require several months of consistent work.
Can Functional Patterns help with chronic pain?+
Yes. FP is highly effective for chronic pain — back pain, shoulder dysfunction, hip pain and neck issues — because it corrects the movement imbalances and dysfunctional patterns driving them, targeting root causes rather than just symptoms.
